Bruce Whittenberg replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'One Book Montana - Blind Your Ponies'
"I thoroughly enjoyed Blind Your Ponies.  It was a great example of character development and small town culture. I also had a sort of personal connection as my father was a high school basketball coach.  This was a book that by the time I…"

Chérie Newman replied to Bruce Whittenberg's discussion 'It's Complicated' in the group Film Club
"Yes. Lots of fun and lots of gourmet food. And not too much man-bashing, past tendency of screen writer Nancy Meyers (The Holiday, Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want). Maybe my middle-class roots are showing, but I didn't get why Merl…"

Ken Egan replied to Bruce Whittenberg's discussion 'It's Complicated' in the group Film Club
"I'm looking forward to this one, Bruce. Read a few reviews that took the film to task for being so, well, unselfconscious about the upper-middle-class lifestyles of the characters. Also considerable talk about Nancy Meyers being "the most…"

It's Complicated

Enjoyed Avatar (2D, though) and Up in the Air. Looking forward to reading Walter Kirn's book, which was in my Christmas stocking. Also enjoyed It's Complicated with Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Baldwin is a great comic actor. Believe it or not, Martin sort of plays the straight man. A baby boomer movie with lots of humor.

Chairman Leach, "Bridging Cultures"

If you haven't yet seen the speech by NEH Chairman Jim Leach, please look it over. It says so much about the state of public discourse, and reinforces the efforts of Humanities Montana, Leadership Montana and others to improve the state of civil public discourse in Montana. Bruce Whittenberg commented on Bruce Whittenberg's blog post 'Billings Community Conversations'
"Lisa, I apologize for not responding to your post earlier. Shame on me for not seeing it. This has been quite a process, and the City Council agonized over the questions, format, everything. It was perceived as much more of a risk than it was. All…"

Billings Community Conversations

As an outcome of the January 30 Can We Talk? workshop in Billings, featuring Patricia Hughes, author of Gracious Space. The City of Billings has taken some rather extraordinary steps. First, Pat Hughes came back to Billings for a Gracious Space workshop for the City Council, staff and administration. Then, a series of eight Community Conversations were scheduled to discuss issues identified as important in a recent city-wide survey. Gracious Space is the background and the conversation cafes…See More

Humanities Montana at Leadership Montana

Ken Egan spoke to the Leadership Montana Class of 2009 and did a terrific job of explaining the humanities (I'm getting closer to understanding) and creating some energy around the public affairs initiative, Speakers Bureau, Book Fest, etc.
Thanks, Ken for spreading the good work of HM.

Good idea, Ken!

I'm getting real good with Facebook keeping up with my sons, Jon, who is in Italy, and Jake in Columbus, Ohio. The new "social media" is really interesting. Makes me think about the humanities content that is being delivered in new and exciting ways. Should be fun and interesting to have a HM site.

Call for manuscripts about your work in humanities-based classes

I'm the editor of a magazine, Principal Leadership, which is published by NASSP and has about 25,000 readers. I am seeking manuscripts for the October issue about the state of humanities in public secondary schools. This forum is a wonderful exchange of ideas, and I'm so heartened to see the humanities being supported.I would love to hear about successful programs and strategies for keeping such classes strong in the face of challenges from…See More
