"Glad to chat with you regarding either topic though I am not too well versed in dowsing. I have seen it done. I'm well versed in Mary Ronan, however! Hope to hear from you."

Montana’s historic spaces and the sense of place they stir within us are the cornerstones of my writing and storytelling. Since 1992 I have been Montana’s National Register Sign Program Coordinator at the Montana Historical Society. Writing hundreds of interpretive signs has taught me to dig deeply into Montana’s heritage places, searching for the untold stories behind their more obvious histories.
Beyond Spirit Tailings: Montana’s Ghosts, Mysteries and Haunted Places Dark Spaces: Montana’s Historic Penitentiary at Deer LodgeI have written dozens of articles and a number of books, always telling stories that draw my audiences into the past. I especially like to weave history and the present with the supernatural. My second book of ghostly tales, Beyond Spirit Tailings: Montana’s Ghosts, Mysteries and Haunted Places, received a prestigious Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. I also partnered with Philip Aaberg, Montana’s Grammy-nominated composer/musician, to produce a fabulous CD with Phil’s original musical score accompanying my reading of Beyond Spirit Tailings. But I don’t always write about the supernatural. I edited Girl from the Gulches: The Story of Mary Ronan, one of the best gold rush memoirs extant and a Finalist Award winner of the 2004 Willa Literary Awards. I also authored Dark Spaces: Montana’s Historic Penitentiary at Deer Lodge. Most recently, Montana Chillers: Thirteen Tales of Ghosts and Hauntings forthcoming in October 2009, is my first book for younger readers. Parents will love the stories, too!
Speakers Bureau Talks
I currently have two talks offered through the Humanities Montana's Speakers Bureau:
Casting Shadows:
Spooks, Specters, and Spirited Places
Historic landscapes are repositories of social and environmental memories that culminate in a “sense of place.” The supernatural provides a perfect venue to teach, preserve, and celebrate heritage places. Montana’s historic landscapes come to life with a thought-provoking journey into the darker places of Montana’s memories. Based on incidents of the unexplained from across the state, the program illustrates how ghosts of the past sometimes show themselves in the present, reminding us that history is important. This program offers spooky tales that enrich the local landscape and beautifully embellish the heritage that is important to all places.

Hard Times at Deer Lodge
The historic Montana State Prison at Deer Lodge incarcerated thousands of prisoners from 1871 to 1979. This documentary presentation on the legendary prison tells the physical and human tale of the troubled institution whose idyllic setting contrasts so violently with the history it holds. Contemporary artist J. M. Cooper’s stunning contemporary photographs, inmate mug shots, and historic images illustrate the stories of the men and women who lived—and sometimes died—forgotten within its massive walls. This unusual PowerPoint is a vivid portrayal of the prison’s built environment and its human history.
If you're interested in having me speak at your organization, or want more information about my talks, please contact me at 444-1687 (office) or 449-0362 (home), or by email at mbaumler@aol.com.

Call for manuscripts about your work in humanities-based classes

I'm the editor of a magazine, Principal Leadership, which is published by NASSP and has about 25,000 readers. I am seeking manuscripts for the October issue about the state of humanities in public secondary schools. This forum is a wonderful exchange of ideas, and I'm so heartened to see the humanities being supported.I would love to hear about successful programs and strategies for keeping such classes strong in the face of challenges from…See More

"Did anyone notice Charles Johnson's article about the gubernatorial candidates, where Neil Livingstone promised to call a Constitutional Convention, in particular, to get rid of the "clean and healthful environment" language?"
