Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
For me, it depends on how you want to rank them... personal enjoyment? Artistic merit? Instructional merit? I'll try to put my personal top 10 together tomorrow; some commonalities, but I have some odd ones that vie for top spots that…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
I definitely agree that the line breaks help, as you quickly pick up on Hugo's meter. Hugo is also wonderful at making even iambic pentameter not seem sing-song. The villanelle in question would be "The Freaks at Spurgin Mill Road".…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
Poetry to prose is always a bit of a tricky discussion; Hugo once commented on the schism between writers and academics, and there is of course a similar gulf between poetry writers and prose writers, which I believe Hugo would regard as silly and…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
Had to go back and find this. In Kicking the Loose Gravel Home, before the reading of Degrees of Grey in PBurg, Hugo sums this up very well: "What seems to happen is I internalize the town, convert it to the town the poem needs, and then simply…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Reflections On...Wildness and the West'
It's quite a terrifying look down - and you're right, it does depend on who you ask, and how you measure. AG Edwards puts it at 4100 (from Cracker Lake), 4000 feet, and as a "3500 foot face". This is comparable to the north face…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Reflections On...The Cultural Continental Divide'
Thanks Jason! Hopefully I can continue, though do need to flesh out some of our differences here. I too bristle at the idea of being "naturally xenophobic" repulsive, and I've worked very hard to treat everyone equally. But…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
Silver Star always reminds me of William Matthews introduction to The Real West Marginal Way, saying that Hugo believed that "the continuous reclamation of a hometown... is the lifelong imaginative project to any adult." It's telling…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Reflections On...The Cultural Continental Divide'
Love this discussion so far, but missing is an acknowledgement that xenophobia - and the grouping of like people - is a very natural, base emotion for people, often drawing imaginary lines between groups of people. A friend of mine is a professor of…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Reflections On...Wildness and the West'
Montanans realize more than most the importance of perceiving reality, and all the small little signs nature and the wilds give you as you find your way in Mother Nature's world. The papers are replete with stories of (usually) visitors who…

Jason Walz replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
A few years ago, while vacationing with a friend who introduced me to Hugo two decades ago, we set out to find many of Hugo's Montana places, and my favorite by far was The Ballpark at Moiese. It was obviously derelict when Hugo wrote the poem…

The pertinent stuff:

BA in English Poetry, University of Missouri/Columbia, 2004. Studied under Lynne McMahon, Sherod Santos, Jim Ottery and others, where I continually butted heads with my professors with the heretical contention that, regardless of form or message, any poet only writes half of any poem.

Learn about your local representatives and political issues. All politics is local, right? If that's true, then knowing who makes the policy decisions that affect you is empowering. Get to know the boundaries of municipal government—i.e.,…
