Kathleen Ely replied to Ken Egan's discussion 'Does the Civil War Matter?'
I was going to say there is a big rift between quilt shops as some carry Civil War fabrics and others do not. The aesthetics of Civil War fabrics is a more traditional, block-oriented quilting. Batiks and wilder fabrics seem to address a different…

When I went to the Montana Women Book Club I told the group about the Sarah Vogan books you have on hand. I think Patricia Spencer from Lewis and Clark Library will probably call you to see if you will let the group have some for a month's…

Kathleen Ely replied to Ken Egan's discussion 'What is the State of Montana?'
Didn't Montana used to have its own planet in the literary universe according to *Esquire* many years ago?

BTW, the only bookstore allowed to send books into Montana prisons, whether in Deer Lodge, Shelby or Billings, is Barnes and Noble. Regarding Target...if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation#Criticism you can see some of the…

Kathleen Ely commented on Lisa Simon's blog post 'Memories of Macy's?'
Maybe this is just a rumor but long ago I heard that the front windows had something to do with Frank Lloyd Wright -- the glass blocks under the awnings were supposed to make the displays brighter?

Oh, Sid. I DID go to Aunt Bonnie's AND the Montana Book Company and they were both out of copies. Also, my son works at the Hastings in Billings so my mother gave us gift cards to Hastings that you can't just cash in to shop at a real…

Kathleen Ely replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Suggestions for the 2010 One Book Montana'
What about *Full Court Quest: The Girls from Fort Shaw Indian School Basketball Champions*? That's one book I read this year which was very compelling and tells a Montana story that has not been heard before. There's plenty of controversy…

I recommend this book highly. It's a very engaging read about Montana homesteading. So many of the books in the past have had this theme though.

Kathleen Ely replied to Ken Egan's discussion 'Homesteading? Civil War? Indian Sovereignty?'
Like Carol Buchanan, I believe the influence of the Civil War in Montana has not been studied enough. Of course, I live in Helena, where we have the furthest north monument to the Confederacy -- a fountain placed just across from the Civic Center by…

Fascinating to see all the good work being done by the Humanities Committee, too. That lovely girl is my four-year-old granddaughter, Alice, who is the child of my son, Zen, who was born when I was at Rocky. BTW, I have been the web developer for the Secretary of State for almost five years and one of the people I work with a lot is Rusty Harper from Rocky.

When did you come back to Montana?
