Good luck to you, Karen. I hope you're finding all the help that's available, wherever you are.

The first  book? Boy, that's tough. I remember so many books that really changed my life as a child. The one that comes immediately to mind is Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. I must have been around 9. And Meg was me. And…

Hey, great grab bag of choices (especially the McMahon...). David, I've been eyeing the Murakami since it came out. I am a big fan of Kafka on the Shore. And I guess I've decided to stop reading all the (decidely mixed) reviews. At some…

What am I reading? "Extremophilia" by Fred Haefele. When he has me laughing out loud, I get sideswiped by raw honesty, brave stories of truth. When he has me crying, I get sideswiped again by wry humor. And sometimes, it's just a good…

I'm currently reading 1Q84 (which, no matter how many times I look at it, I always want to call "Eye-Q-84").  I picked it up at Fact & Fiction last week after literally weighing the balance--physically and mentally--of…

Two L.A.-centric books to recommend, though composed in very different genres:   Neil McMahon, "L. A. Mental: A Thriller."  Neil plays all kinds of changes on the L. A. noir tradition--including a femme fatale, a mad scientist,…

Thanks David! Tree of Smoke blew me away--I remain a fierce advocate for its slightly unhinged power. It reminded me of Damascas Gate by Robert Stone, another book I love.   But I've never heard of The Clearing or its author. I'm…

I just realized that I posted the first entry in this string almost a year ago after the 2010 book festival. And, once again, I followed this year's festival with a weeklong binge of New Yorker and literary journal catch-up before I could…

I like the distinction Karen brought back from the Flathead Writers Conference. That makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks Karen, and its good to hear from you again. John, how I wish I could be in the audience at the Country Bookshelf!

Wow, Glen that is such a great question, and I really hope the writers explore it at the Festival panel. I'm still thinking it through. When I think personal essay I think Montaigne who was the master of weaving the personal with a bigger…

Reflections West's second show

I just cheated and listened to the second episode of Reflections West (ego knows no bounds) an hour early on the web. Congratulations to Lisa Simon and David Moore--the show feels like a door is quietly opened, inviting me to step out into a new vista. Thanks for letting me be a contributor. I'm looking forward to next week's reflection.

NeuroLit?

There's a wonderful discussion in today's NYTimes, http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/05/can-neuro-lit-crit-save-the-humanities/ which is, in its turn, a response to this article from last week,

That article features a few intrepid English…

Learn * Reflect * Together Can Make You Happier!

Check out this New York Times article, http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/17/talk-deeply-be-happy/

which suggests that people who engage in deep, substantive conversation are happier than those who interact primarily with small talk. We knew it!

Dillon Rocks!

Last Friday my husband Neil McMahon and I were invited to talk to Alan Weltzien's American Literature class (forgive me Alan, I've already forgotten the actual title of the class) at UM-Western. The class has been reading Montana mysteries, including Dashiell Hammet's Red Harvest, Richard Hugo's Death and the Good Life, James Crumley's The Wrong Case, and Neil's novel Lone Creek. I don't know if Western's intensive study bloc schedule is to be credited or not, but both Neil and I were immensely… Continue

When I went to the Montana Women Book Club I told the group about the Sarah Vogan books you have on hand. I think Patricia Spencer from Lewis and Clark Library will probably call you to see if you will let the group have some for a month's reading. NEXT month, in May, we are reading *Lone Creek*. See what good taste we have?
