"Larry, I like your kind of labeling! And I think you're so right that the vast majority of humanity wants the same basic things--peace, freedom, safety, meaningful work and opportunity... I, too, would hold media culpable to a certain extent,…"

"Okay, here's a silly one. I moved to New York City from Montana when I was 18. I'd never been east of North Dakota. I was living with a poet (natch) and hanging out in the usual cliched literary joints. And my poet boyfriend (not for long)…"

Kim Anderson replied to Humanities Roundtable's discussion 'Hugo's Selected Poems'
"A lovely riff on Hugo and Crumley, indeed. And it reminds me of the great connection Hugo had to noir--this huge weeping heart under the tough guy cadences of many of his lines. His alter ego in Death and the Good Life was named, after all, Mush…"

Reflect: the meaning of service

Just returned from Chicago where several of us here on the Roundtable got to brainstorm--thanks to the NEH and the Illinois Humanities Council--how to bring the work we've been doing in Montana through our Reflect program to young people engaged in service work. Thanks to the Illinois Humanities Council's terrific Meaning of Service program, we have the opportunity, here in Montana, to deepen young people's experience with Americorp or Vista or other service programs, as well as the opportunity…See More

After the First Draft--the end of a romance

Hello fellow writers. Well, last night I finished the first draft of a young adult novel I've been working on and the printed pages are sitting in the middle of the dining room table. And, while I love looking at the tidy stack, I'm terrified to actually read it. All workshop wisdom says to let it sit in the drawer for awhile, but we don't have the luxury of time (I wrote this draft based on an idea my husband came up with about fifteen years ago and couldn't sell.) YA is suddenly very, very…See More

Morality Play

I just took the Morality Play quiz, thanks to Jason Neal's link.
To anyone who knows me it's not surprising that I came out strongly "morally parsimonious." Roundtablers, this site is a great trove of party games to get us all thinking and talking. Shakespeare vs Britney Spears -- what is art? Create your own Deity. We could play for hours. Thanks Philosopher's Magazine and Jason!

The Olympics

Watching the pairs figure skating tonight, I'm reminded again about what I love, and yet find so odd, about the Olympics and other sports competitions. Obviously what NBC thinks will get us to watch obscure sports events that normally would not be on our radar is story. Every competition comes with certain players who have great stories, and even while I know its been manufactured (like a novel?) damned if I don't fall for it every time. The Canadian free-style mogul skier whose brother has… Continue

Call for manuscripts about your work in humanities-based classes

I'm the editor of a magazine, Principal Leadership, which is published by NASSP and has about 25,000 readers. I am seeking manuscripts for the October issue about the state of humanities in public secondary schools. This forum is a wonderful exchange of ideas, and I'm so heartened to see the humanities being supported.I would love to hear about successful programs and strategies for keeping such classes strong in the face of challenges from…See More
