Bio for Zan

I am a poet, story writer and playwright living in Spokane, WA, but I have a magical relationship and connection to Montana. I have been dear friends with Victor Charlo since the mid-80's when I moved from the Bronx, NY (not my birthplace) and became a Jesuit Volunteer in St. Ignatius, MT.

My first official poetry reading was April, 1987, with Vic at the Second Wind Reading Series above Corky's--some people remember THOSE days.

I have since been in collaboration with Bitterroot Salish poet, Victor A. Charlo, co-writing contemporary Native American plays since 1990. Together, we have co-written, directed and produced a number of plays with The July: The Whiskey Experience and L.A. Christmas Trees being the most recent.

I have devoted many years to arts organizing, and have received grants for fiction, plays, and poetry. My short story, White Bees of Winter, was published in the winter of 2005 in a special First Fiction issue of the Gilcrease Museum’s publication, Gilcrease Journal.

I live in Spokane, WA. and work at the BBB Serving Eastern Washington, North Idaho & Montana as Communications Director/Lead Fraud Investigator. I regularly read throughout the NW and perform poetry with musicians under the guise of Mercury Rising.

Victor and April Charlo and myself will be doing a FIRST BOOK MINI TOUR this summer/fall. Victor's first book of poetry is PUT SEY (Good Enough) from Many Voices Press, FVCC. My first book of poetry is STAMEN AND WHIRLWIND from Gribble Press, Spokane, WA.

Look for posts of our upcoming readings in MT and surrounds!

Dear Zan,
Sorry to be so slow in getting back. Yes, I did receive your email, and I'm sorry that Helena won't be on yours and Vic's and April's tour this summer/fall. It's been very difficult to get folks together during these summer months, and we're pretty focused on putting our Helena bookfest together on limited resources. Let's try again next year. Have a marvelous time on the tour! And keep in touch, and I'll do a better job of communicating!?!

All best, Rick

Hello! I don't know Kory (Sp?) personally, but boy do I know River Rising--excellent food, esp. the gluten-free cookies. Being a poet must be quite the experience. Haha, I have tried to write poetry. didn't work so well ;)

I am a recent graduate of Hamilton High School and I'm headed to Maine for college this fall (headed to Finland in a few days also). Right now I'm working on bring a civil discourse conference to Hamilton High School next year. The grant writing is just something I have to squeeze in with work and everything else. Fun times!

Call for manuscripts about your work in humanities-based classes

I'm the editor of a magazine, Principal Leadership, which is published by NASSP and has about 25,000 readers. I am seeking manuscripts for the October issue about the state of humanities in public secondary schools. This forum is a wonderful exchange of ideas, and I'm so heartened to see the humanities being supported.I would love to hear about successful programs and strategies for keeping such classes strong in the face of challenges from…See More
